Hillary Clinton's College Thesis and the Controversy

It was very interesting...During her time at Wellesley College, a young Hillary Rodham wrote her senior thesis on Saul D. Alinsky, an idealist who used radical techniques to get results. And that should have been the end of the story.

During Bill Clinton's presidency, the paper was hidden away where journalists and biographers could not find it. Those who could not stand secrets did not consider this an innocent action. They thought Hillary had something to hide. People speculated about why the paper was kept under wraps. Did it contain evidence of communist leanings on Hillary's part? Was Hillary a closet radical? Or did Hillary have no political philosophy at all?

Unknown to many, this thesis is now available to anyone who goes to the archives at Wellesley. People can go to a special room and take a look at what Hillary wrote. In fact, the thesis was made available to the public after the Clinton presidency ended.

Not surprisingly, Hillary's thesis contains an analysis of Alinsky's methods. In her assessment, his methods just are not practical for anyone other than him. And that seems to be the real gem of the piece. It reveals that Hillary was a pragmatist while in college. Big shocker! She happens to be a pragmatist now.

So the conspiracy theorists have been proven wrong. The thesis contains no dirty secrets capable of damaging Hillary's political career. But that does not mean that her opponents will not pull phrases out of context to use against her. Such behavior is typical of smear campaigns.

I just cannot help wondering why people obsessed so over this thesis. It was written four decades ago, and Hillary surely has grown up since then. She met Bill. She became a lawyer. She became First Lady. She became a Senator. And now she wants to be President. Do her recent experiences not reflect her thinking more than her old thesis?

Actions speak louder than words. Should people not consider Hillary's actions over the past two decades or so? Should voters not pay more attention to her position on key issues, how she voted as Senator, and her campaign platform? Not to mention the all important question of gender.
